Welsh Christmas Traditions

Published: 10 Dec, 2024

Here at Edwards we love all things traditional which is why we’ve taken a look at Welsh Christmas traditions, both past and present.

Noson Gyflaith
Christmas eve was also known as Noson Gyflaith (toffee evening) for many. The evening would typically involve families gathering to make taffy in preparation for the early morning church service on Christmas Day.

Plygain
Historically, in the early hours of Christmas morning between 3 and 6am, the people of Wales would attend a Plygain service. The service would include a reading or sermon followed by songs and carols sung by families. No carol would be sung twice and the service would last a couple of hours before everyone would head to the local Inn for breakfast.

A more modern tradition
Ieuan Edwards, our founder and master butcher, has his own family tradition. Every year his children are responsible for preparing and stuffing the turkey. After all, they have been taught by the best!

Here at Edwards we believe every Christmas dinner should involve our award-winning pigs in blankets and our Traditional Pork Sausage Meat (although we might be slightly biased).
